Tree Appraisal

What is Your Tree Worth?

Most people agree that trees have value—but did you know that value can be quantified in dollars? Trees offer aesthetic beauty, ecological benefits, and even historical or sentimental worth. But when it comes to insurance claims, legal cases, or development disputes, monetary value is what matters most. That’s where a professional tree appraisal comes in.

What is tree appraisal?

Tree appraisal is the process of determining the monetary value of a tree or landscape plant. This is not the cost to remove or clean up a tree after damage—it’s the value of the tree just before it was injured or destroyed (however, the final total may include clean-up costs).

Whether your tree was hit by a vehicle, damaged during construction, or sprayed with herbicide, a certified tree appraisal gives you the documentation you need for insurance reimbursement, litigation, or restitution.

At Wellnitz Tree Care, our consulting arborists are Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualified (TPAQ), Board Certified Master Arborists (BCMA), and Registered Consulting Arborists (RCA). We specialize in providing detailed, defensible appraisal reports that are accepted by insurance companies, attorneys, municipalities, and courts.

How does tree appraisal work?

There are multiple ways to assess the monetary value of a tree. We primarily use the Trunk Formula Technique, described in the Guide for Plant Appraisal, 10th Edition. This industry-standard method estimates the cost of replacing the largest commonly available nursery tree and scales that value to reflect the size and condition of the existing tree in the landscape. Adjustments are then made based on multiple factors, such as the condition of the tree and its limitations.

What to expect from the process

Tree appraisal is a step-by-step process that includes:

  • A site visit to take measurements, photos, and assess damage

  • Review of environmental factors, species characteristics, and site history

  • A formal written report that may be submitted to insurance, legal teams, or local agencies

Most appraisals are completed within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on complexity. In high-stakes or legal cases, appraisals may involve in-depth investigation and extended timelines.
